COMMUNITIES AND SALESIANS IN THE VICE PROVINCE OF SOUTHERN AFRICA (AFM)SA Map showing Communities

The Salesians live in communities that are relatively autonomous, although accountable to the Provincial Superior and his Council. Each community has a Rector who is responsible for the spiritual well being of the members and the implementation of the mission. Decision making happens through House Council meetings.

The community at the Salesian Institute, Cape Town, is the oldest in the Vice-Province and was established in 1910. The solid building is a landmark on Somerset Road, on the corner of Chiappini Street. The present rector is Fr Michael Connell.

Click here to view the Salesian Institute Annual Report 2008.

The community runs several Youth Projects..

  • Learn to Live consists of an informal school for children up to the age of 16 from shelters as well as from the streets. It also has a few workshops where older youth learn Welding, Carpentry, Panel beating and Leather Work.
  • The 16+ Outreach programme makes contact with youth on the street in order to win their trust and introduce them to the Hostel programme.
  • The Don Bosco Hostel accommodates between 25 and 30 youth older than 16 who voluntarily enter an 18 month rehabilitation programme, popularly known as the School of Life, for youth who have spent years on the streets fending for themselves.
  • The Green Point parish forms part of this community, with the presbytery at Cheviot Place, Green Point, and the churches of Sacred Heart in Somerset Road next to CWD and St Margaret Mary in Green Point. Fr Bart Walsh is the parish priest.
  • Samsung Real Dreams Youth Employment Skills (YES) focuses on skills training for unemployed school leavers.

The Lansdowne Community is situated on Lansdowne Road, along the M5. Here the Salesians established an agricultural school in 1923. The farm was eventually closed in the late 1940’s and moved up to Daleside in Gauteng. The school – Savio College – continued until 1976. Since then part of the former school property has been used for a variety of youthful activities and at the moment it is used by the Santos soccer club.

The parish of Our Lady Help of Christians was established in 1932 and the present church was built in 1960. The parishes of Hanover Park (1972) and Westridge (1977) are also staffed by members of the Lansdowne community. The present Rector is Fr Canice Dooley.

The Life Choices Project, a behaviour change and HIV/Aids education and awareness programme has been run from here since 2004 and Lansdowne is also home to the Provincial Planning and Development Office since 2206.

The Walkerville community (1949) with Fr Robert Gore as Rector, is situated on a farm along the Randvaal Road in the Walkerville district south of Johannesburg. It incorporates the Bosco Youth Centre, which is popular as a conference and retreat centre and is ideal for large groups of youth who love the wide open space and swimming pool.

The LoveMatters programme has been offered here for the past six years as a residential behaviour change programme and is popular among schools from all over Johannesburg, with teaching staff reporting noticeable positive changes in the students.

Fr Dino Miotto has been for 15 years the principal of the excellent Michael Rua Primary and Intermediate School nearby, which had been established for farm children from the area and is now classed as a public school on private property with a Catholic ethos. Being in a rural setting, over 800 learners are bussed there each day.

The Ennerdale community (2005) is situated on 7th Avenue in Ennerdale. It used to be the Salesian Novitiate until August 2008. Now the Novitiate for the Southern African and Zambian Provinces is located in Zambia.  Together with the Salesian Sisters who run the Laura Vicuna in the nearby informal settlement of Finetown, the community are responsible for Developing the Don Bosco Educational Centre in Ennerdale. This Centre is being developed to incorporate the Declan Collins Educational Centre and the Laura Vicuna School.

The Ennerdale community is also responsible for the parish of All Saints (1969) where Fr Sean Murphy is the parish priest. It consists of three large communities based in Finetown, Lawley and Ennerdale itself.

The Community is responsible for St Luke’s Parish – one of the largest missions in the diocese of Leribe. There are pre-schools, primary and high schools which are animated in partnership with the Salesian Sisters, who also run the Mazzarello Craft Centre where girls with less academic aptitude learn sewing and tailoring skills.

Lesotho's youth

The community is also responsible for a large oratory and for pre-novitiate formation. At present the Salesians at the invitation of the Archbishop, are establishing a new presence in Maseru which would include a large parish, schools and an Oratory.
